Websites are like storefronts. Don't neglect it.

You know how your neighbor who took a computer class once and kind of remembers Photoshop and a little HTML, promised to make a a nice website design for your new business? That probably isn't the best idea. Having your own website is like having your own storefront on the corner of 5th and Main. If your website is going to represent your business idea, innovation, organization, or professional creativity, then you should have your website designed, developed and maintained by professionals who can help you portray that.
While your friend or family member may be a great means of keeping costs low, it isn't always the best idea as they may not be up-to-date with contemporary web UI and other web industry coding standards. A good web design can also be thought of as a mesh between Picasso and Bill Gates (for lack of a better correlation). It takes an artist along with extensive coding knowledge in order to develop a web design masterpiece.
Although some business owners may feel it isn't in their budget to get a professional website designed and developed, we must remember that you have to give some to get more. Over a billion people (over 1/6 of the world's population) surf the internet on a daily basis looking for new restaurants to try, cool places to go, neat things to buy, businesses to hire and answers to their everyday questions. A poorly designed website can often break your reputation. In today's world, your website is your storefront. Don't neglect it.
